Whole-of-Government Desktop Strategy

The Whole-of-Government Desktop Strategy is a component of action 3.5 'Whole-of-Government Desktop Strategy Progressed' of the Smart Directions Statement (for Information and Communications Technology within the Queensland Government, December 2004).  The Strategy provides a long-term vision under which agencies and the Queensland Government as a whole will position the desktop to support and enable the business of Government, and optimise the management, support and procurement of desktops within the sector.

The Strategy contains a number of strategic directions, including the “Implementation of a Managed Operating Environment (MOE)”.  The adoption of an MOE approach to the desktop will help drive the implementation of whole-of-life best practices across the sector in the management of desktop related infrastructure.  It will also increase the efficiency and effectiveness of desktop resources by moving the sector towards a high level of maturity in desktop capabilities and services.

To support Queensland Government Agencies in implementing the MOE strategic direction, in July 2006 the Queensland Government Desktop Best Practices Framework (PDF, 1.12mb) was officially endorsed.

The Queensland Government Desktop Best Practices Framework is a whole-of-life, technology-neutral, maturity model approach to optimising the planning, management and support of an enterprise’s desktop environment.

Whilst the Framework was primarily developed for use within the Queensland Government, its generic application and value in the broader public and private sectors is considered highly transferable.

The Queensland Government is pleased to be able to make the Framework available to the general public as part of the Queensland Government’s Smart State initiative.

Smart State is a Queensland Government vision of a State where knowledge, creativity and innovation drive economic growth to improve prosperity and quality of life for all Queenslanders.
