The Government’s Smart Directions Statement for ICT within the Queensland Government identified in its Focus Area 3.7 the need to progress the consolidation of agency data networks.
The whole-of-Government Consolidation of Agency Data Networks project is assessing the benefits of combining the individual data communications requirements of Queensland Government agencies. It is addressing the requirements for carrier transmission services, and includes support services such as maintenance and helpdesks. The aim of the initiative is to improve Government buying power and efficiencies through the sharing of common equipment and facilities.
The project was approved in concept by a Cabinet Business Review Committee decision in July 2004. Since then, the Department of Public Works has led an inter-agency working group in the review of Queensland Government data networks, and the examination of potential costs and benefits of rationalisation.
A multi-agency working group has prepared a Stage I draft report and the Queensland Government Chief Information Office is coordinating a number of early adopters of this strategy to aggregate their purchasing requirements for data services. A draft strategy for the consolidation of agency data networks is being prepared for consultation by stakeholders.
