Placed with Queensland Health

After finishing his Bachelor of Information Technology degree majoring in data communication, James, 25, took a break, put his career aspirations on hold and headed for the Canadian Rockies. While he has always been interested in technology, James is also interested in extreme sports such as rock and mountain climbing, snow boarding and martial arts. ‘I worked as a ski lift operator for a season in Lake Louise near the border of British Columbia and Alberta and loved it. I had a great time while I was there, and did a lot of snowboarding and hiking through the Canadian Rockies,’ he said. James admits he has set no ultimate goal yet in his career and is happy ‘to go with the flow’ while he explores the options open to him within the program. ‘I enjoy being part of the graduate program and things are going well so far,’ he said.

Placed with Department of Education and Training

Linda, 22, says she is one of the ‘net generation’ and considers technology an integral part of life. ‘I’d be lost without my Play Station and iPod,’ she admits. The graduate program has given Linda a vital opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills she learned at university where she completed a Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology degree. ‘The program gives me a greater understanding of government departments and the public service sector,’ Linda said. Linda sees her role of a business analyst as an intermediary between business and technology, and that’s how she likes it. ‘My long-term goal would be to move into project management some day,’ she said. I also hope to maintain the valuable friendships I’ve made with the other graduates and co-workers as a result of being part of this program.’

Placed with Shared Service Agency

It was his love of the outdoors that led Warren, 27, to his first job as a forestry overseer, but it was his continuing fascination with technology that brought him into the IT industry. While he still spends time camping and fishing and kayaking as well as playing tennis, touch footy and basketball, Warren made a career-changing decision to go back to uni to concentrate on IT. ‘I joined the graduate program after working as a software engineer for Mincom because I wanted to gain experience in the server management area of information technology support,’ Warren said. ‘I like to learn new things and I always want to know why things work the way they do. My goal is to secure a permanent position in IT with the Queensland Government where I can continue to develop my skills and be continually motivated,’ Warren said.
