GEA Classification Models

Queensland Government uses the term "Portfolio Framework" to describe the primary classification models of the Government Enterprise Architecture (GEA) - essentially taxonomies of the business, information, applications and technology layers.

These frameworks perform a similar classification role to that provided by the chart of accounts in managing finances, the organisational chart in managing human resources, or QKey for managing records. This high level categorisation provides the big picture view which is essential for effectively managing any resource - as it allows for consistent planning, reporting and use at either the local agency or whole-of-Government levels.

The GEA portfolio frameworks are available in document form for download, a searchable online version and in XML format for use in agency enterprise architecture tools.

Using the online frameworks

Each framework is comprised of concepts known as domains. The domains in the framework are arranged in a hierarchy of preferred classifications, based on the following three levels:

  • Level 1 - the broadest classes of applications recognised by Queensland Government’s GEA
  • Level 2 - major types of applications within each broad domain
  • Level 3 - which describe the more specific application domains (subjects or topics)

Each domain within the framework contains:

  • Notes - provides a description as guidance on the applicability of a domain
  • Parent - domains at a higher level
  • Child - domains at a lower level
  • Related - domains at the same level
  • Use - the approved domain to use when viewing a Variant
  • Variant - other terms (including products) used to describe a particular domain or domains within the framework, including synonyms and equivalents of domains, and obsolete domains. All variants are linked to domains so that searching always leads agencies to the preferred domain option.

Note: The XML file for each framework is accessed via the main page of the online version.
