Access authorisation (Definition)

The system controls and surrounding processes that provide or deny parties the capability and opportunity to access systems (i.e. gain knowledge of or to alter information or material on systems).  In practice, the act of authorising access usually occurs after authentication has been successful. Authentication checks if the party is who they claim to be. Access authorisation checks what the party is allowed to do.
