Application Programming Interface (API) (Definition)

An application programming interface (API) is a set of programming instructions and standards for accessing applications and data. Examples: Mobile app developers can access Amazon’s product information because Amazon released its product API. When someone buys a movie ticket online and enters credit card information, the movie ticket website uses an API to verify credit card information.
