Custody/Custodian (in the context of Recordkeeping) (Definition)

The physical control of (or the entity that has physical control of) and responsibility for the care, management and preservation of records or other material based on the physical possession of the records. Custody does not always include legal ownership or the right to control access to the records.
The custodian is the organisation or person with physical custody of the records. The owner retains legal responsibility for the care and preservation of the records, as well as right to control access.
