Metadata Schema (Definition)

A metadata schema defines a comprehensive set of metadata elements for a dataset including any required fields, field types, definitions and data structures. Schemas provide procedural rules which ensure a standardised approach to both metadata creation and use which in turn facilitates discoverability, interoperability and access. There are many well established schemas which have been developed for certain types of data (e.g. DCAT for Open Data or ANZLIC for geospatial data).
